Well, I got goldfish. I bought a nice little bowl (since replaced with a nice gallon tank with an air filter) and plants and food and all of that stuff. And yet... The first of my fish were Bobby (orange) and Darien (silver--as in quicksilver for anyone who watched I-Man), named after the main characters from Invisible Man formerly of the Sci-Fi channel. I was depressed about the cancellation of the show, so I figured naming my fish after them would be nice. Unfortunately, after a few days, Darien died. I found him floating in the hole in the rock I got them to play in. While I was sad, I figured since he only cost $0.38 I could replace him without too much trouble. Then came Chiana. She was lively and beautiful, pale orange with black edgings and named after the char from Farscape. I actually got pretty attached to her because she just seemed so neat. But she too passed on. At least she floated to the top (much easier to retrieve them that way). Next came Steve, named after a character in Resident Evil, a very spirited little gray fish who only lasted a couple of days before I found him floating belly to the bowl. After that I decided Bobby needed some alone time. Or a straight jacket. I mean, can it really be coincidence that every fish I put in the bowl with him dies? But I bought the tank (very cheap but nice) and decided to get a new fish at the same time. I took him home and actually refused to name him for some time. Finally I decided on Wesley, a character from Angel I used to hate but now like in flashes. I figured that might keep me from getting too attached should he die. I turned around and walked over to the tank to watch him get adjusted and tell him his name and--guess what? You got it! Dead. Bobby pretended he didn't notice. So now Bobby is alone again. Wait until tomorrow when the saga continues after I go and purchase another fishy. I'm a glutton for punishment. And I don't get out much. November 7th, 2001 ~ New fish! I named him Fawkes. Again, after the Invisible Man char. I figured he deserved a second shot and he's all silver and little and pretty. So far, he and Bobby seem to be getting along quite well, so I have high hopes. December 31st, 2001 ~ Fawkes actually lasted about a week before he, too, met the fate of the others. Sad. I liked him! But last night I purchased a new fish and resolved not to name him until this morning. Now, the tank is home to both Bobby and Kenji (named for a character from the Bloody Roar Playstation games). February 10th, 2002 ~ Surprise, surprise. Kenji actually lasted almost a week before croaking, but he did. I have not yet attempted to get another cellmate for Bobby. He'll just off the poor thing anyway. But, then, I'm a lunatic, so I might buy another fishy anyway. April 22nd, 2002 ~ I never got another fish. Figured Bobby was more than enough trouble all by himself. Unfortunately, today I decided to clean the tank (seriously funky--lots of algae that built up while I was too busy with class to clean it) and... Bobby died. I put him back in the water and a few minutes later he went belly-up. First one of my fish to float as good dead fish should, though. Going to Wal-Mart tomorrow to buy two new ones. August 8th, 2002 ~ I've been too lazy to update. I bought three guppies: Byers, Langly, and Frohike. All you X-Files fans will recognize those names. Unfortunately, Frohike died a few months ago. The other two are not only alive but thriving, and I have high hopes that they'll continue to do so... if Byers doesn't finish chewing Langly's tail off and start on the rest of him. I did have one last go at fish a few months ago. Wes bought me two beautiful guppies and a glass fish which I named Spaz because it was, well, a spaz. Freaked out everytime I opened the thing to feed them to the point that he actually surfaced a little. I cleaned the tank once, however, and despite doing everything properly (not to mention how I always have), they died. This is, of course, after the stress of the move to Denton killed my Lone Gunmen. ...Now I have hamsters. March 19, 2005 ~ We have a new fish, a pretty beta named Fiji Mermaid- Fiji for short, naturally. He's got a white head and a purple and blue body. Verrrry lovely. He seems happy and active and healthy. February 8, 2008 ~ I'm not sure on the date since I didn't record it, but somewhere at the start of 2007, I do believe, Fiji passed away. No more fish now, and thus... the saga is over! |
