Background: His family immigrated to Christchurch, New Zealand when Michael was 7 years old. He attended Papanui High School (years F3-F7), and at age 14, Michael started to get involved in school drama projects (acting, directing and painting backdrops). At age 19, after 1 year at University of Canterbury, he went to work at Christchurch's Court Theatre. At age 23 (in 1979), Michael was accepted at Theatre Corporate, Auckland, and spent seven years with the company, becoming a chairperson in 1985.
